Gjesdal municipality is a mountain district, at the west coast of Norway, in the crossing between Jæren and Dalane, approximately 30 km southeast of Stavanger. The municipality border on several other municipalities, such as Forsand, Sandnes, Time, Bjerkreim and Sirdal.
The population of Gjesdal has passed 10 000, spread along an area of 620 km². Ålgård is the main village of Gjesdal, with its 8000 inhabitants. Other villages are Oltedal, Gilja and Dirdal.
One of Rogaland’s main roads, E39, passes through Ålgård. E39 leads to Sandnes and Stavanger in the north direction and to Kristiansand in south, and the road are used by thousands of motorists and Lorries every day, as it is the main connection between the east coast and west coast of Norway.

Gjesdal has also one of Norway’s youngest populations, and the municipality has a strong focus on the well-being of children. There’s a place in kindergarten for everyone, good schools and a high focus for a healthy environment for everybody.
In Gjesdal you also find one of Norway’s highest densities of sheep, and woolen goods and textiles was for many years the most important industries in Gjesdal. The municipality symbol is a ram, which represents Gjesdal’s former dominating industry of wool and textiles.
Organization
Gjesdal's main goal is to put the user first, give a total offer based on proffesional collaboration, delegate decision authority to secure best utilization of the resources, and direct conscious after goals for standard and quality.
Gjesdal municipality is organized in 6 different service areas:
- Internal service center
Assists the different service areas with consulting and other services, together with services related to politics. Excisting of administration, economics and staff department. - Resource center for children and adults
Child welfare, good adolescence, social services, rehabilitation services, psychical health, health station, voluntary central and cultural office. - Service area technical
Building technology, management, map and surveying, municipal technics and development. - Service area kindergarten
- Service area care
Common services, home services, environmental work, care residents at Ålgård live- and activitycenter and medical residence. - Service area education
Primary school, special teaching for adults on a primary level, SFO, cultur school and library.
Gjesdal municipality’s vision is “We stretch longer”. Gjesdal is a big and long municipality and our goal is to yield good municipal service, and that Gjesdal should be a great place to live.
For tourists
There are many things to see and do in Gjesdal. Worth while mentioning is Rogalands highest waterfall, Månafossen, located in Frafjord. Gloppedalsura, the biggest scree in North Europe, is easy available near Byrkjedal. Kongeparken amusement park is located in Ålgård, near the main road to Stavanger, in addition to several other attractions.
