The Norwegian Welfare System and Social Services
Norway has a welfare system that provides support for people in different life situations. This includes services such as financial support and healthcare. The system is mainly organized through the National Insurance Scheme (folketrygden).

The National Insurance Scheme
The National Insurance Scheme gives access to social security and healthcare services in Norway. In general, you are a member if you live and work in Norway. Your rights may depend on your residence status, work situation, and how long you have lived in the country.
Through this system, you may have access to:
- healthcare services
- sick pay if you are ill
- parental benefits
- unemployment benefits
- disability benefits
- pensions
Some benefits require that you meet certain conditions. You can read more about this here.
NAV – support and guidance
NAV is responsible for most social services in Norway. They can help you with:
- financial support if you have little or no income
- finding work or activities that support you in your job-seeking, such as courses, work or language practice, internships, or Norwegian language training
- guidance about your rights and options
If you are unsure what support you may be entitled to, you can contact NAV for guidance here.
You can read more about NAV’s financial support and services here.
It is important to apply for support if you need it.
The basic amount (Grunnbeløpet – 1G)
Some benefits in Norway are based on a standard amount called grunnbeløpet (1G). This amount is updated every year and helps decide how much support you can receive. For more information, please visit Grunnbeløpet i folketrygden - nav.no.
